Drains are incredible features in the modern 21st century. With the ability to remove unwanted waste, sanitation is at an all-time high in American households and businesses. However, in order for such systems to require regular maintenance, there are times when a drain cleaning session will be necessary to eliminate and flush away any unsanitary waste to ensure proper sanitation is kept at every residence or business. At Jim Dandy Sewer and Plumbing, we specialize in various drain cleaning methods, such as hydro jetting and power rodding, to help ensure the health and safety of everyone.

The Materials That Can Form Clogs

While drains are meant to flush away waste, they are not infallible to becoming clogged by the materials flowing through them. In addition to the content being flushed down the drains, there are external factors that can adversely affect the pipes as well. Common problems can create drain blockages in a multitude of ways, including:

  • Tree Roots
Tree roots can grow through thick piping underground and cause serious clogs and, if left to grow into the pipe long enough, can even block a drain entirely. The reason tree roots are found around and in sewer lines and drains is due to moisture. When trees and even shrubs need to be hydrated, they follow a trail of moisture vapor escaping from small cracks, holes, or poorly sealed joints in pipelines, leading to drains being infiltrated by roots.
  • Sediments or Debris
Sediments and debris eventually build up and block systems through soil being deposited in small cracks, or storm systems overflowing and adding sediment as they move through the pipes. This sand-like texture eventually settles and builds, cutting off the water supply. Eventually, it can severely block pipes and lead to backflow in kitchen sinks or tubs.
  • Hair
Human hair is a common type of waste buildup, especially in residential shower drains. Our team can not only help fix this problem with our knowledge and equipment but also we also recommend installing a hair catcher for the drains to ensure that the buildup doesn’t become a recurring issue.
  • Oil
Oil can easily clog drains for both residences and businesses. Oil from food builds up fast and blockages can carry bacteria, germs, and other unsanitary particles that can be hazardous to clean out. Proper sanity measures and inspections need to be taken before the cleaning of oil buildup in drains. Jim Dandy Sewer and Plumbing technicians have years of experience and a trained background to fix this problem and maintain sanitary procedures in your house or business.
  • Non-Flushable Items
Foreign materials that are non-degradable are one of the most common reasons for clogged drains, specifically residences that have young children. Toys are often flushed down the drain and get stuck due to their size or edges and can back up toilets or sinks immediately. Our licensed technicians can inspect these drains with CCTV cameras and remove the toy quickly. Other non-flushable items include cotton swabs, detail floss, sanitary napkins, and pre-moistened baby wipes.

Our team is very aware of the problems these situations can cause and we are proud to offer multiple options to fix the issue fast.

Cable Drain Cleaning

Drain cables are long spring-like devices that, once they come into contact with a clog in the drain line, will have pressure applied on itself, turning the previously flexible drain snake into a strong, stiffened rod that can blast through the clog. Drain cables have two different setups: inner-core or no-core. A no core cable weighs less and has greater flexibility than an inner-core cable.

Our technicians will break up and break through the blockage by repeatedly flexing the drain cables in the drain against the clog. This stiffens the drain cable and eventually, the clog is broken up and flushed out. Our experts at Jim Dandy Sewer and Plumbing are trained and experienced in this process and will fix the problem quickly.

Hydro Jetting

This process is one of the newest solutions for clogs. Hydro jetting creates extremely high-pressure jets of water to blast away clogs and is perfect for cutting through infiltrating tree roots. A thin high-pressure line is covered by a nozzle that shoots jets of water in all directions. The pressure of the water can be anywhere from 3,500 to 4,500 PSI and is perfect for not only blasting away the central blockages but also removing pipe walls of sludge and grease accumulation.

It is commonly used to remove oil clogs due to the sanitation and safety of getting rid of the oil buildup. The high-pressure water in the pipes not only flushes the debris away from the point of the blockage but also completely out of residences or businesses. The best thing about hydro jetting is that, despite water pressure involved, it clears clogs without creating trauma or excess pressure in the pipe. Instead of a heavy-duty snake or metal cable scraping the drain, the pipeline remains relatively untouched. Hydro jetting is now used to clear and clean drains from 1-inch home drain s to large city sewer lines. With our expertise in hydro jetting, our professionals at Jim Dandy Sewer and Plumbing can help blast away any clogs in your home or business and provide clean drains.

Power Rodding

Power rodding is an older cleaning method that was easy to use in the past since it also bypassed the traditional drain cleaning excavation procedures. Before power rodding the only other option was locating the clogged pipe segment in the walls of the home or underground and opening the pipe to remove the blockage. This meant opening up floorboards, walls, or other parts of a home or business to access the pipes.

It was originally developed as an alternative to snakes. Power rodding uses a flexible metal cable that threads into drain systems and around bends and joints just like cable draining. The difference is a cleaning head with sharp teeth is installed at the leading end of the cable, unlike cable draining equipment. The size of this attachment depends on the size of the drain it will be snaking. The sharp cleaning head turns very quickly thanks to an electric motor. Due to the speed of the turning of the attachment, any clog doesn’t stand a chance. It can rip out tree roots, or cut away years of sludge buildup. The fragments left behind can easily be flushed away.
